Details

The property is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the Tennyson Heritage Coast across which it has panoramic southerly and westerly views over the English Channel, past the spectacular chalk cliffs beneath Tennyson Down, towards the Purbeck Hills in Dorset beyond.

Dunsbury Grange has been featured consistently as one of the UK’s top 100 cottage locations by the Sunday Times in its top 100 ‘Cool Cottages’.

‘Yes there’s lots of lovely walking on the downs inland, but what are going to do when the beach is right there in front of you – a five-minute walk down a track? This former bakehouse is crisp, clean and comfortable inside, but it’s the location on the Isle of Wight’s wild and beautiful south coast, that will wow you.’
Sunday Times 24 Jan 2010.

Compton Beach is approximately a 600 metre walk away and provides a stunning setting for walking and swimming as well as being a popular venue for surfing, paragliding and kite surfing. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a property in a genuinely unique location. Compton Beach has rock structures dating from the dinosaur age – significant fossil remains and petrified forests have been found off shore and can been seen, particularly at low tide. A network of footpaths and bridleways lead onto the downland to the rear of the property, again providing access to stunning walks and riding. Dunsbury Grange stands alone, surrounded by farmland, and the paths lead down to the sea which is less than five minutes’ walk.

This detached period house is built of stone under a cedar shingle roof, with a later two storey stone addition at the western end. The house was refurbished by the current owners in around 2005 and has since been used as a successful holiday let. The accommodation is light and airy and the southern and western elevations provide excellent country and sea views.

Dunsbury Grange is a great seaside house ideal for group holidays. It is decorated in traditional cottage style. There’s a big farmhouse-style kitchen, a separate dining room and a games room with storage and drying facilities for surfboards and wetsuits. The garden has a fabulous south-facing terrace in front of the house, which is perfectly placed to enjoy the evening sunsets over the white chalk cliffs.

Neighbouring Dunsbury Farm is famous for its pure-bred flock of Poll Dorsets, which provide naturally produced, out-of-season lamb year round. The lambs are grass-fed on unspoilt coastal chalk downlands, giving them a flavour and quality well known beyond the island. Holiday guests at the Grange have frequently cooked Dunsbury lamb on the barbecue and rave about it! The farm is dedicated to conservation, winning the NFU Conservation Award for 2009. The withy beds and fields adjacent to Dunsbury Grange attract fascinating bird life including short-eared owls, skylarks and lapwings.

Dunsbury Grange is available as a whole or in 3 Lots with an advertised maximum of about 3.11 acres (1.098 ha) est though further land could be made available by separate negotiation.

The property is approached over a gravelled driveway from the Military Road providing a right of way which then leads to a private owned gravel driveway bordered by lawns leading to a turning and parking area to the front of the house for a number of cars. Lawns to the west of the house either side of the drive form the main garden where there is also a stone paved terrace from which wonderful sea and country views can be enjoyed. The view extends to include the white cliffs of Tennyson Down at the Western tip of the Isle of Wight where Alfred, Lord Tennyson walked for inspiration, to the Jurassic Cliffs of Swanage Bay and Anvil Point on Dorset’s distant shore.

The Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight, situated off the South Coast of England, is becoming an ever-more popular location for permanent and second homes. Made popular by Queen Victoria, who had her maritime residence at Osborne, the Island is famous for sailing in the Solent; for Cowes Week; for its beautiful coastline including sandy beaches and The Needles; spectacular countryside and long sunshine hours. There are now many more facilities than once was the case, Sainsbury, Tesco and M&S all now have a presence as have other national chains.

Government-funded schools are numerous and independent schools thrive on the Island with some children attending prep and public schools on the mainland. Leisure opportunities abound – walking, riding, paragliding, hang-gliding, team sports, sailing, wind surfing and other water sports, rugby, football (Newport Football Club) cricket and golf clubs. Good transport links enable day trips to the shopping centres of West Quay, Southampton and Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.

Communications
Communication and transport links are excellent; the house is only 10 minutes away from Yarmouth and only 3 hours door to door from London. Regular car ferries connect with the national motorway network and fast catamarans have connections via Southampton and Portsmouth to direct trains to London Waterloo which can be reached within 2 hours of leaving the Island shore.

Freshwater
Freshwater Bay is situated around a shingle bay on the coast about 2 miles south-east of Freshwater village close to the western tip of the Island. From the bay there are superb country and coastal walks including the Tennyson Trail. There is an 18 hole golf course and several cafes, restaurants and bars. The Island’s principal town of Newport with its wide variety of shopping facilities and schools is within about 12 miles and the car ferry port of Yarmouth to Lymington (35 minutes) is within about 4 miles. The famous beaches at Compton Bay, Colwell Bay and Totland Bay are all close by as is the beach at Freshwater Bay itself.

Yarmouth
Yarmouth is a picturesque port situated at the western end of
the Island on the beautiful River Yar estuary, a popular
sailing and wildlife centre. The town has a long history, the
castle being built by Henry VIII in 1547 as a coastal defence. Within the centre of the town there are shops, cafes, restaurants and traditional pubs and hotels. The local primary school, The Royal Solent Yacht Club, pier and harbour with its car ferry connection to Lymington (35 minutes) are all conveniently near by.

Brook
A charming village on the Island’s south coast with church and charming post office caravan. This spectacular Coast is famed for its rural Natural Trust beaches, dinosaur foot prints and fossils. Once the home of General ‘Galloper’ Jack Seely – Soldier, Politician, lifeboat man and friend of Churchill who spent summer holidays at
Brook. Seely trained the ‘Real War Horse’ Warrior to the sound of the guns in preparation for the First World War on Brook Beach (see History Channel – The Real War Horse)
