This characterful early Georgian house was built in 1802 and is believed to be the first vicarage built in Cowes serving nearby St Mary’s Church. Whilst the house retains many period features including the adjacent former stables (originally used by the vicar to visit his parishioners), it was sympathetically refurbished and modernised in 2006. As a result the house, which is Listed, Grade II combines an array of period features with the benefits of good quality modern fittings. Works included complete renewal of electrical, plumbing and heating systems, as well as installing new high quality kitchen and bathrooms. Period features include stained glass windows as well as fireplaces to all of the principal rooms. There is an attractive mature walled garden to the rear of the house as well as a large roof terrace at first floor level from which there are sea glimpses which are more extensive from the second floor.
Michael Edward Ratsey lived at Vernon House in the 1870s and 1880s. He built two of the English challengers for the America’s Cup, one being the schooner “Cambria” for the race of 1868 and the other being the “Livonia” for the race of 1871, both were owned by Lord James Ashbury.
The property is well situated within the Conservation Area of the old town of Cowes, opposite Northwood Park providing an attractive setting with tennis courts. There is excellent access to the shops, restaurants, marinas and various yacht clubs of Cowes whilst the high speed passenger ferry service to Southampton with a crossing time of about 23 minutes is only a short walk from the house.
