Garage. Gardens with direct Solent frontage including a leased deep water mooring.
This Edwardian Mansion, originally built for the Duchess of Carnarvon was converted into five houses of which Carnarvon House forms the major part. Carnarvon House benefits from direct and private Solent frontage and a leased deep water mooring by licence from The Crown Estate. There are sea views from the house, which has some fine quality period features including exceptional oak joinery and plaster mouldings. The accommodation is spacious, well proportioned and has been well maintained. The vendors have recently installed photovoltaic panels which produce/export electricity as well as a new boiler.
The property is situated on the Eastern fringe of Yarmouth with its popular and attractive harbour. There is a range if shops, public houses and restaurants as well as the Royal Solent Yacht Club and Yarmouth Sailing Club. There is a frequent ferry service from Yarmouth to Lymington taking approximately 35 minutes. Inland from Yarmouth much of the surrounding countryside is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and provides excellent walking and a good range of other recreational pursuits.
History
Carnarvon House was the summer residence of the Earl and the Duchess of Carnarvon. The main residence of the 5th Earl was Highclere Castle in Newbury built in Victorian Elizabethan style with the gardens laid out by Capability Brown. There is mention of the cedars grown from seeds brought back from an expedition. It is therefore interesting to speculate that the building of Carnarvon House and the cedars which still grow there had some connection with Highclere Castle.
The 5th Earl of Carnarvon was a racing man. He raced horses then when the automobile came in, automobiles. One reporter saw him driving at the reckless speed of 30mph! He had a number of accidents, including one in Germany. These accidents evidently undermined his health and caused some lung damage. To escape the English winter and poor climate he went to Egypt. He became bored and in 1907 turned his attention to Egyptology and so began his involvement with the excavation of the Royal tombs at Thebes and then sponsoring the Egyptologist Howard Carter. He apparently had a snake proof cage built in which he could sit with his wife and watch the excavations. He then went on to discover the tomb of Tutankhamun.
