The
Island occupies an area of approximately 147 square miles with a
coastline 57 miles long of which over half is designated as heritage
coast. In addition about half the Island is designated as an Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much of it including unspoilt rolling
downland.
There
is a population of about 135,000. The administrative centre of the
island is the centrally located town of Newport.
